Independance in Partnership with the South Bank Arts Centre & Greenwich Dance Agency is planning to present the FIRST

UK B-girl Festival 2006

The South Bank Arts Centre

September 2006

Over the last three years Independance has become excited by the potential of Hip Hop culture to reach new audiences and enliven the dance world.

Following a period of research it seems timely to mount a celebratory event to:

challenge the stereotyping of b-girls and empower the female role within the Hip Hop industry

Partners are currently developing ideas, making preparations and gathering support for a festival, which is anticipated to take place in September 2006

Independance will be working in collaboration with legendary b-girl, Asia One, to develop a lively programme of performances, workshops, discussions, exhibitions and film screenings involving b-girls from around the globe. Although the festival is still in its planning stages, there are two confirmed strands of work as part of Independance's b-girl focus. The first is a six-month training programme which will involve groups of young women in a number of UK cities, and a schools sports and arts pilot initiative in South London exploring the potential links between gymnastics and breakin'.
